ECONAMID® FL 6GM3010H1

PA6-based · 10% Glass Fiber + 20% Mineral · Lightweight Engine Cover Solution

The engine cover (cylinder head cover) is a critical protective component on top of the engine, requiring long-term service under harsh conditions including high temperature, oil mist, and vibration. It demands excellent heat resistance, dimensional stability, chemical resistance, and mechanical strength. ECONAMID® FL 6GM3010H1 is a PA6-based 10% glass fiber + 20% mineral reinforced compound, specifically designed to address warpage and dimensional stability challenges in engine covers.

📋 Material Overview

ECONAMID FL 6GM3010H1 is a 30% hybrid reinforced (10% GF + 20% MD) polyamide 6 compound, offering excellent dimensional stability, low warpage characteristics, and good heat aging resistance. Formerly known as HECONAMID FL 6GM3010H1, it is ideal for large thin-wall structural parts like engine covers.

🔧 Material Requirements for Engine Covers

🌡️ High Temperature Resistance

Engine compartment temperatures reach 120-150°C; material must maintain mechanical properties and dimensional stability.

🛢️ Oil & Chemical Resistance

Long-term exposure to engine oil and coolants requires excellent chemical resistance.

📐 Dimensional Stability

Large thin-wall parts are sensitive to warpage, requiring low shrinkage and high dimensional stability.

💪 Mechanical Properties

Sufficient rigidity and impact resistance to withstand vibration and assembly stress.

🔧 Processability

Large parts require good flowability and moldability.

💰 Cost Effectiveness

PA6-based materials offer significant cost advantages over metals and PPA.

🔬 Hybrid Reinforcement (GF10+MD20)

10% glass fiber provides rigidity, while 20% mineral filler reduces anisotropy, significantly minimizing warpage and shrinkage differences between parallel and normal directions — ideal for flat, box-shaped engine covers requiring high flatness.

📊 Mechanical Properties (DAM/Cond.)
Tensile Modulus 6000 / 3500 MPa
Stress at Break 100 / 60 MPa
Strain at Break 3 / 10%
Flexural Modulus 5300 MPa
Charpy Notched Impact (+23°C) 5 / 10 kJ/m²
Charpy Unnotched Impact (+23°C) 30 / 90 kJ/m²
🌡️ Thermal Properties
Melting Point 221°C
HDT (0.45 MPa) 205°C
HDT (1.80 MPa) 175°C
Vicat Softening Temp 200°C
📐 Mold Shrinkage
Parallel: 0.3-0.5% | Transverse: 0.7-0.9%
※ Mineral filler significantly reduces anisotropy
⭐ Hybrid Reinforcement (GF+MD) vs. Glass-Only
Reduced Warpage — Mineral platelets balance glass fiber orientation
Excellent Dimensional Stability — Ideal for large flat parts
Cost Optimized — Mineral filler is less expensive than glass fiber
Improved Surface Quality — Reduced glass fiber exposure
High Flowability — MVR 75 cm³/10min for thin-wall molding

🏭 Engine Cover Application Results

✅ Significant Weight Reduction

Compared to traditional aluminum engine covers, PA6 composite achieves 30-40% weight reduction, contributing to vehicle lightweighting and fuel economy.

✅ Warpage Control

Mineral filler effectively controls flatness of large engine covers, providing excellent sealing performance without post-machining.

✅ Long-Term Heat Resistance

HDT of 175°C @ 1.8MPa meets long-term thermal aging requirements in engine compartments.

✅ Cost Advantage

PA6-based material offers lower cost than PA66 and PPA, further optimized by mineral filler.

⚙️ Recommended Processing Parameters

Drying Temp/Time: 75-85°C / 2-4 hours
Dew Point: < -30°C
Melt Temperature: 240-270°C
Mold Temperature: 80-90°C

※ Not recommended for hot runner systems with diameter below 1mm. For large engine cover molds, optimize gate design for uniform filling.
